Sayre is a small unincorporated community located in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is situated southeast of the city of Birmingham. The community is primarily residential with a few small businesses. It has a population of fewer than 1,000 people. The area is served by the Jefferson County School System and public transportation is provided by the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority. The town is named after William Sayre, who was a friend and business partner of Thomas Jefferson. Sayre is also known for being the site of several early iron furnaces, which played a major role in Alabama's industrial development.
